Middi Morphy: Revolution in MIDI Parameter Control
In today’s world of music creation using software instruments and effects, managing numerous MIDI parameters can be a real challenge. Each synthesizer or effect has its own unique settings, and switching between them, or, more complex, creating smooth transitions, often requires painstaking automation or manual intervention. This is where Middi Morphy comes to the rescue – a unique VST plugin developed by D3CK, which offers a fresh perspective on the process of controlling MIDI parameters, transforming it into an intuitive and creative process.
Middi Morphy is not just another automation tool. It is a MIDI preset “morpher” that allows you to interpolate, i.e., smoothly transition, between different configurations of MIDI parameters. Imagine being able to create several “snapshots” or “scenes” of settings for your synthesizer or effect, and then easily move between these scenes in a two-dimensional space, observing and listening as the parameters dynamically change, creating new, unexpected soundscapes and complex transitions that would be extremely difficult or impossible to achieve with traditional methods.
Principle of Operation and Interface
Working with Middi Morphy is centered around the concept of “scenes” and a two-dimensional “morphing field.”
- List of MIDI controllers: On the left is a list of MIDI controllers that the plugin uses. Initially, it is empty, but it fills automatically or manually.
- Morphing field: The central part of the interface is a two-dimensional area where you place your scenes. Each scene represents a specific set of values for the tracked MIDI controllers. By moving the cursor (or using automation) across this field, the plugin calculates the current parameter values by interpolating (mixing) the values of the nearest scenes. The closer the cursor is to a particular scene, the greater its “influence” on the final sound.
Key Features and Workflow
Middi Morphy is designed with an emphasis on speed and ease of use, especially for experimentation and live performances. It offers several smart features that greatly simplify the setup process:
- Autolearn Mode: Enabled by default. When the plugin receives MIDI input data (e.g., from the controller knobs you’re turning), it automatically recognizes the corresponding MIDI controllers and adds them to its tracking list. This allows you to instantly connect your controller and start working without having to manually assign each parameter.
- Autokey Mode: Also enabled by default. In this mode, when you receive MIDI input (e.g., pressing a button on the controller or receiving a specific message), Middi Morphy automatically creates a new scene in the morphing field at the current cursor position. This is extremely convenient for quickly capturing interesting settings “on the fly” during jamming or sound design.
- Context Menu: Accessible with a right mouse click. Provides access to the main settings and options, including the ability to disable or configure autolearn and autokey modes, manage scenes, and more.
- Navigation: Convenient navigation across the morphing field is done using the mouse wheel (zoom in/out) and the middle mouse button/wheel with dragging (panning the field).
Creative Possibilities
Middi Morphy opens the door to a multitude of creative possibilities. You can use it to:
- Create complex, evolving sound textures that smoothly transition between different states.
- Develop dynamic presets for live performances, allowing you to instantly “morph” between different sounds of an instrument or effect.
- Experiment with sound, quickly exploring the space of parameters defined by your scenes.
- Create unique automation that looks and feels completely different from traditional curves in a DAW.
Middi Morphy is a fresh and inspiring tool for any musician or sound designer who works with MIDI. Its intuitive interface, smart autolearn and autokey features, and unique approach to morphing presets make it a valuable addition to your VST plugin arsenal. Thanks to it, managing complex MIDI settings turns from a routine into an exciting creative process of exploring sound possibilities.
Note that Middi Morphy is available as a VST plugin for the Windows operating system (32-bit). Make sure your DAW supports this plugin format.
