Discover Dulcet by Xenobioz – a unique physical modeling software synthesizer. If you are looking for fresh and unusual sounds for your music projects, Dulcet offers deep sound design capabilities, allowing you to create timbres that go beyond the traditional subtractive or FM synthesizers.
Physical modeling simulates the sound of real objects and materials, reproducing how vibrations propagate and interact in a virtual “body.” Dulcet masterfully utilizes this concept, giving you the tools to shape resonances and overtones with amazing detail.
What is Physical Modeling?
Unlike synthesizers that generate sound using oscillators and filters (subtractive synthesis) or frequency modulation (FM synthesis), physical modeling attempts to recreate the physical properties of vibrating objects: strings, membranes, tubes, wood, etc. You “excite” a virtual body (e.g., with a strike or bow), and then the model calculates how energy spreads and resonates, creating sound that resembles real acoustic instruments or completely new, otherworldly timbres.
Dulcet uses this principle to create rich, organic, and often experimental sounds that can range from subtle textures to powerful, resonating leads or basses.
Key Features of Dulcet
Dulcet is equipped with a set of modules that interact with each other to create complex soundscapes:
- Body-resonator: The heart of the synthesizer, simulating the resonant properties of a physical object with many available modes to change the character of the sound.
- Noise generator: Provides Pink, Red, Blue, and White noise modes. Can be used as a standalone noise generator or as an exciter for the physical modeling model, especially when the feedback (FB slider) is set to maximum.
- Oscillator: Offers classic waveforms – sawtooth, sine, square (with adjustable pulse width), as well as white and pink noise modes. Can work as a sub-oscillator or as an alternative exciter for the physical model.
- Pre-filter: Located before the physical modeling block. Has different filtering modes and allows you to select the signal source (noise, oscillator, or both).
- Second filter: Located after the physical modeling block. Offers additional filtering modes and flexible modulation options for further timbre shaping.
- Modulation: Includes vibrato and tremolo effects, as well as a separate LFO for filter modulation, which adds dynamics and movement to your sounds.
- Pitch envelope: Allows you to create interesting pitch change effects with adjustable triggering probability.
- Delay: Built-in delay module for adding space and echo effects.
Sound Design Possibilities
By combining these modules, you can explore a huge range of sounds: from realistic (or near-realistic) imitations of strings, brass, or percussion to completely abstract, experimental textures, drones, sound effects, and much more. Physical modeling allows you to create sounds with a living, breathing quality often absent in synthesizers based on samples or classic synthesis forms.
Dulcet comes with 128 high-quality presets that demonstrate the diversity of its capabilities and can serve as an excellent starting point for your creative process. The presence of a detailed user manual will help you quickly master all the intricacies of working with this unique tool.
