Strum

Strum: A String Synthesizer Based on the Karplus-Strong Method

Discover the unique sound of string instruments and experimental synthesizer textures with the Strum plugin from zOne.sk. This virtual instrument, implemented using the Karplus-Strong method, opens up new horizons in music creation, offering deep variability and detailed control over sound.

Strum is not just an imitation of a guitar or bass. It’s a full-fledged synthesizer, capable of generating a wide palette of sounds, from realistic plucked strings to absolutely fantastic textures that will surprise even the most experienced musicians and sound engineers.

Key Features of Strum:

  • Two Independent String Generators: The plugin is equipped with two separate string generators, each with its own settings for feedback, string length, attack/decay envelope, and vibrato. This allows for creating extremely rich and complex soundscapes by mixing or layering different types of strings.
  • Sound Variability of the First Generator: The first generator offers a simulation of four basic string types: nylon, bronze, steel, and flatwound. This makes it possible to reproduce the characteristic sound of acoustic and electric guitars, bass guitars, and other stringed instruments.
  • Experimental Second Generator: The second generator is based on classic waveforms – sine, saw, triangle, and square, adding the ability to fine-tune tension and position parameters. This is the perfect tool for creating synthesized, unconventional string sounds.
  • Common Processing Modules: Both generators use a common amp envelope, tremolo effect, and timbre feedback settings, ensuring unity and coherence of the sound.
  • Universal Multimode Filter: The plugin has a powerful multimode filter with many types: lowpass, bandpass, highpass, bandreject, peak, as well as unique implementations of Chamberlin, zOne, and classic 303-style resonant filters. This variety allows for sculpting the sound with extreme precision and expressiveness.
  • LFO with Unique Waveforms: One LFO (Low-Frequency Oscillator) is designed to modulate the filter cutoff frequency and offers 17 different waveforms, including classic ones (sine, saw, triangle, ramp, square) and 4 unique forms based on Lorenz, Rössler, and Ikeda attractors. This opens the door to creating complex, unpredictable, and organic modulation effects.
  • Built-in Effects: For the final sound polishing, Strum includes Delay, Chorus, and Reverb modules, as well as a simple soft knee limiter to control the dynamic range.

Technical Details:

Strum is written entirely in assembler, which indicates high optimization and efficiency of the plugin’s operation, even in complex projects.

Whether you’re looking for authentic string sounds or want to experiment with abstract synthesizer textures, Strum offers the tools needed to realize your creative ideas. Its flexible architecture and rich feature set make it a valuable addition to the arsenal of any musician, producer, or sound designer.
