San: A Hybrid Synthesizer by Saltline

Welcome to the world of San – a unique hybrid synthesizer from Saltline, combining the warmth of analog sounds with the flexibility of digital wave shaping. San is designed for musicians and sound designers seeking fresh, unusual timbres and expanded possibilities for sound experimentation.

This instrument offers a powerful sound engine and an intuitive interface (though with hidden depths), making it an excellent choice for both quickly creating ideas and deeply immersing yourself in the fine-tuning of each parameter.

The Heart of Sound: San’s Oscillators

The foundation of San’s sound is based on a well-thought-out combination of different oscillator types:

  • Two classic analog oscillators, providing the rich, lively sound inherent to vintage synthesizers. Each is complemented by a separate FM oscillator, opening the door to frequency modulation and the creation of complex, metallic or ringing timbres.
  • One phase distortion oscillator, adding characteristic digital, “crisp” or “glassy” textures to the sound palette, reminiscent of classic digital synthesizers of the past.

This hybrid architecture allows you to freely mix signals from all generators, creating an unlimited number of unique basic timbres – from warm pads and fat basses to aggressive leads and experimental soundscapes.

Timbre Shaping: Filters and Modulation

Flexible Filtering

San provides full control over timbre shaping thanks to an advanced filter section. Each sound generator can be independently routed and mixed between two of three variable state filters. This means you can not only select the filter type (low-pass, high-pass, band-pass), but also dynamically control its characteristics, creating mobile and adaptive timbres that respond to your needs.

Advanced Modulation Capabilities

To breathe life into your sounds, San is equipped with a rich modulation section:

  • Three multi-purpose LFOs (Low-Frequency Oscillators). Each LFO has flexible routing (multi-routable) and can work at different speeds (multi-rate), allowing you to create complex, multi-layered modulation effects – from slow vibrato and tremolo to fast, rhythmic patterns.
  • Two classic ADSR envelopes. Ideally suited for shaping the standard dynamic characteristics of sound – attack, decay, sustain and fall in volume or other parameters.
  • One 8-stage envelope. This is a powerful tool for creating more complex, non-linear dynamic contours. You can specify eight different points and their duration in detail, allowing you to model unique sound behavior that goes beyond the usual ADSR.

The combination of flexible filters and various modulation sources makes San an extremely expressive instrument, capable of creating both classic synthesizer sounds and completely new, unheard timbres.

Add Character: Built-in Effects

For the final touch and adding additional texture to your sounds, San has built-in effects:

  • Flanger/Chorus effect. Adds space, movement and a characteristic “blurring” to the sound, ideal for pads, strings or experimental textures.
  • Distortion effect. Provides aggression, saturation and harmonic distortion to the sound, perfect for basses, leads or guitar simulations.

These effects allow you to finalize the sound directly in the plugin, reducing the need to use additional processing.

Convenience and Control

Although San is a deep instrument, the developer Saltline has taken care of convenience. The second panel of the plugin contains a brief guide to the key functions and, which is important for integration into the studio workflow, a list of MIDI controller IDs. This simplifies the setup of controlling San parameters with external MIDI devices, allowing you to “play” the synthesizer and experiment with sound in real time.

San from Saltline is more than just a VST instrument. It is a platform for creativity that combines the best of the analog and digital synthesis worlds. Whether you’re creating electronic music, writing soundtracks, or just love experimenting with sound, San offers the tools you need to realize your boldest ideas.
