Welcome to the world of deep and multifaceted timbres with Purple by Odosynths! This VST instrument is not just another synthesizer, but a real laboratory for creating unique sounds based on the principles of FM synthesis. If you are looking for a tool capable of producing both the classic ringing and metallic sounds inherent in FM, as well as completely new, unexpected textures, Purple is ready to become your indispensable assistant in musical creativity.
Heart of Sound: FM Engine
At the heart of Purple lies a powerful 4-operator FM engine. This provides enormous flexibility in shaping the timbre. Four operators can interact in eight different ways (routings), allowing you to create both simple and extremely complex soundscapes. Each operator is a source of signal that can modulate the frequency of another, creating harmonically rich or dissonant timbres. By experimenting with routings and operator settings, you will discover endless possibilities for sound design.
One curve option is available for all operators, which allows you to further shape the character of their behavior and interaction, adding another layer of control over the final timbre.
Timbre Shaping: Filters and Envelopes
Flexible Filtering System
Purple is equipped with two filters that work in parallel and have common envelope settings. Types available include Lowpass, Hipass, Bandpass, and Bypass. Each filter has cutoff and resonance controls, as well as the ability to influence negative/positive and curve settings, making them expressive tools for shaping timbre.
Envelopes and Modulation
The synthesizer has three main envelopes for dynamic control of parameters:
- Volume envelope: Controls the volume of the sound over time, allows you to create sharp or smooth transitions.
- Modulation envelope: Can be assigned to modulate the cutoff of filters and pitch. A special feature is synchronization with the project tempo (BPM retrigger).
In addition to the envelopes, there are two small LFOs, also synchronized with the BPM. They can be used to modulate the phase of operators 2, 3, and 4, as well as to modulate the cutoff of both filters. This opens the door to creating moving or pulsating timbres.
Additional control over the depth of phase modulation allows you to fine-tune the intensity of the LFO’s influence on the operators.
Built-in Effects
To further enrich the sound, Purple contains a set of built-in effects:
- Simple panner: For sound positioning.
- Chorus: Adds volume and “thickness”.
- Flanger: Creates characteristic “metallic” sounds.
- BPM stereo delay: Stereo delay synchronized with the tempo.
These effects allow you to finalize your sound without the need for additional plugins.
Additional Features
Purple also offers several convenient features:
- Glide: Smooth transition between notes.
- Retrigger: Reset the phase with each click.
- Mono Mode: Monophonic sound mode.
With 128 built-in presets, you can quickly get started or use them as a starting point for your own experiments. These presets demonstrate the wide range of capabilities of the synthesizer.
Purple by Odosynths is a great tool for musicians and sound engineers who want to immerse themselves in the world of FM synthesis. Its intuitive interface and rich set of features make it a valuable addition to any VST collection. Create unique timbres, experiment with modulation, and add a special character to your musical works with Purple!
