Christmas Belly

Christmas Belly: More Than Just Chimes

Open the door to a magical sound world with Christmas Belly from Quilcom – a unique VST instrument that expertly models the sound of wind chimes. This plugin goes beyond simple reproduction, offering deep control over sound generation and dynamics, allowing you to create both realistic and atmospheric soundscapes as well as experimental textures.

The Heart of Sound: Generation and Mixing

Christmas Belly uses a combined approach to create its special timbre. At the core is a simple FM-synthesizer, which generates tones that mimic the resonance of metal tubes or bells. Added to this is a random wind generator, which not only creates background noise but also affects the probability of hits. Completing the sound palette is a ringing filter to simulate the sound of the striker itself.

All three sound sources – FM-synthesizer (chimes), wind generator, and striker sound – can be mixed in arbitrary proportions, giving you complete control over the final sound. You can create a gentle whisper of wind with barely audible chimes, or bring out harsh strikes against the background of strong wind. Additional ambience control allows you to adjust the sense of space, making the chimes more “distant” or “close”.

Chimes Under Your Control

One of the key features of Christmas Belly is detailed control over the “chimes” themselves.

  • You can have up to 8 separate chimes.
  • Each chime can be adjusted individually in pitch.
  • After setting the basic scale, the entire set of chimes can be shifted up or down in semitones within one octave.
  • The unique function of “stretching” or “compressing” the scale allows you to create different degrees of dissonance or disharmony, opening up space for creating unusual, atonal, or experimental sounds that go beyond traditional wind chimes.

Interactivity and Dynamics

Christmas Belly is not a static instrument. It responds to incoming signals and internal parameters, creating a dynamic and live performance.

Play like an Instrument: MIDI Input

The presence of a MIDI input fundamentally changes the way the plugin is used. You can connect a MIDI keyboard or sequencer and play on Christmas Belly as a full-fledged musical instrument. This removes the limitations associated with the percussion section, allowing you to control which “chimes” and when will sound, opening up possibilities for melodic lines, arpeggios or rhythmic patterns created using these unique timbres.

Hit Mechanism

The percussion section on the left panel controls the automatic generation of sounds. It has two mixable sources: Wind and Ringers. The Wind parameter adjusts the influence (chance) of how strong wind gusts increase the probability of hitting the chime. This allows you to simulate the realistic behavior of wind chimes on the street, where strong wind causes more frequent and chaotic hits.

Creative Possibilities and Applications

Christmas Belly is not just an imitator, but a powerful tool for sound design and musical creativity. You can use it to:

  • Create atmospheric backgrounds and textures.
  • Add unique percussive elements to your tracks.
  • Generate ambient or meditative soundscapes.
  • Experiment with atonal and dissonant sounds.
  • Write music in the styles of folk, new age, ambient or soundtracks.

Thanks to flexible synthesis, mixing, tuning, and dynamic settings, Christmas Belly from Quilcom will be a valuable addition to the arsenal of any musician or sound designer looking for fresh and inspired sounds.
