What is Fire?

Fire by Wings Music is an exciting multi-band effects plugin created by a music enthusiast for fellow experimenters. It masterfully combines the power of distortion and downsampling, allowing you to transform your audio signals beyond recognition or add a subtle, unique character to them. Unlike traditional distortion plugins, Fire works in multi-band mode, which means the ability to independently process different frequency ranges. This provides unprecedented control over the sound, opening the door to complex and interesting soundscapes – from warm analog saturation to extreme digital artifacts. Whether you’re working on drums, bass, synthesizers, or vocals, Fire provides unique tools for sound design.

Key Features and Control

The Fire plugin provides a complete set of tools for fine-tuning and shaping your sound, offering both powerful effects and smart auxiliary functions:

  • Drive: The main element responsible for the level and character of distortion. You can choose different distortion functions to achieve a wide range of sounds. Additional “L” (Link) and “S” (Safe) buttons are intelligent gain control assistants. The Link function automatically reduces the output volume when increasing the Drive, helping to avoid overloading the master bus. The Safe function is even smarter – it automatically limits the Drive parameter itself if it leads to too high a signal level, and even visually shows how much the value has been reduced. This allows you to experiment more boldly with high Drive levels without fear of immediate clipping.
  • Compressor: Multi-band compression is a powerful tool in Fire. You can separately adjust the threshold (Threshold) and compression ratio (Ratio) for each frequency band. This allows you to precisely control the dynamics of each part of the spectrum after or during distortion, maintaining punch in the lows or leveling the highs.
  • Width: This parameter allows you to adjust the stereo width of your signal processed by the plugin. You can make the sound wider, more voluminous, or, conversely, focus it in mono for greater density.
  • Filter: A flexible filtering section that includes Lowcut (low-frequency cut), Highcut (high-frequency cut), and Peak (parametric peak filter) filters. It is especially worth noting the ability to choose the slope steepness for Lowcut and Highcut filters: 12, 24, 36 and 48 dB/octave values are available. This provides surgical precision in shaping the frequency response before applying distortion or downsampling effects, or for the final correction of the processed sound.
  • Downsample: A function that allows you to reduce the sampling rate of the audio. This is a classic effect that mimics low-quality digital sound, creating characteristic “digital” artifacts and adding a lo-fi aesthetic. Ideal for creating unique textures, robot voices, or retro sounds.
  • HQ (High Quality): Activating high-quality mode, which applies 4x oversampling. Oversampling is critical when using nonlinear processes such as distortion and downsampling, as it effectively combats aliasing – unwanted digital artifacts that can pollute the sound. Turning on HQ provides a cleaner and smoother processing result.
  • A/B: A convenient function for comparing two different sets of settings within the plugin. You can quickly switch between configuration A and configuration B to compare their sound and choose the optimal option without having to save presets.

Scope of Application and Creative Potential

The Fire plugin will find its place in the arsenal of any musician or producer looking for new ways to process sound. It is ideal for adding aggression and “fatness” to bass parts, adding punch and character to drums, creating interesting lead synthesizers, or transforming vocals. Thanks to the multi-band architecture, you can, for example, add a light saturation to the low frequencies, strong distortion to the middle and downsampling to the highs, getting a complex and multi-layered effect. Experiment with different combinations of Drive, Compressor and Downsample to create unique textures, glitch effects, retro sounds, or modern, aggressive tones.

Important Warning

Please remember: at the time of this description’s release, Fire is in the early beta stage of development. The author, Wings Music, warns that this plugin is not recommended for use in final production projects due to its experimental status. It is intended for familiarization, testing, and creative experimentation. Stay tuned and follow future updates from the developer!
