Red Rock Sound HLF-3C: A Vintage Filter for Your Mix

Revitalize your sound with the HLF-3C from Red Rock Sound – a unique plugin that brings a legendary vintage filter directly into your DAW. Created based on the classic passive HLF-3C hardware, this plugin offers a simple yet highly effective solution for tone shaping and audio cleaning.

More Than Just a Filter

HLF-3C is a 12 dB/octave tilt filter that allows precise control over the low and high frequencies of your signal. From subtle tonal coloration to creating distinctive “retro” effects, this plugin provides flexibility without unnecessary complexity.

Unlike the original passive hardware, which had its own signal loss, the Red Rock Sound HLF-3C plugin implements unity gain. This eliminates the undesirable drawback of the hardware predecessor, making it an ideal tool for modern digital production – there is no signal level loss until you engage one of the filters.

Intuitive Control

The HLF-3C interface is as simplified and intuitive as possible, offering only three main controls:

  • In: This switch serves to bypass the plugin. In the down position (Bypassed), the plugin processing is disabled. The plugin is activated when the switch is in the up position. This allows you to easily compare the processed signal with the original.
  • Low Cut: This rotary switch lets you select the low-frequency cutoff. Eleven fixed values are available: 50, 80, 100, 150, 250, 500, 750, 1000, 1500, and 2000 Hz (CPS).
  • High Cut: This rotary switch is designed to select the high-frequency cutoff. Eleven fixed values are available: 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 15 kHz (KCS).

Applications: Clarity and Character in Your Mix

Due to its characteristics and simplicity, the HLF-3C is perfect for various tasks in the mixing and sound design process. You can easily remove unwanted frequencies in individual instruments or entire subgroups while maintaining the musicality of the material.

The plugin is ideal for:

  • Efficiently cleaning instrument parts from unwanted hum or “sand.”
  • Shaping a unique vintage tonal character.
  • Using on subgroups such as drums, bass, or vocals to give them a characteristic era-specific hue.
  • Quick and musical frequency cutting without phase distortion, characteristic of some modern filters.

Its simplicity and effectiveness make it a valuable tool for both beginners and experienced sound engineers seeking a quality filter with character.

Compatibility: Works Where You Need It

The Red Rock Sound HLF-3C plugin is available in popular VST and AU formats, providing broad compatibility with most modern Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) on Windows (Win32 and Win64) and macOS (OSX) operating systems.
