dBComp: A Powerful Compressor/Limiter for Drums and Beyond

In the world of music creation, where every drum hit and every note matters, proper dynamics processing is key. The dBComp plugin by Analog Obsession is precisely the tool that will help your drums sound powerful, tight, and controlled. Designed specifically as a compressor/limiter for drums, it is capable of giving the necessary weight and “punch” to your beats, making them the foundation of your mix.

But don’t limit its use to drums only! dBComp proves to be an extremely effective tool for acoustic and electric guitars, as well as bass guitar. It adds that desired “snap” – the speed of attack and dynamic clarity that highlights the instrument in the mix while preserving its natural sound.

Key Features and Controls

dBComp offers an intuitive set of controls that, despite their simplicity, open up a wide range of sound-shaping possibilities. Under the hood, there is complex program-dependent logic that makes its operation as musical and adaptive as possible.

  • Attack time: The plugin’s attack time is program-dependent. This means that it automatically adapts to the input signal level, providing natural and effective compression. For example, for a signal with a 10 dB reduction, the attack is approximately 15 ms, for 20 dB – 5 ms, and for 30 dB – only 3 ms. This behavior is ideal for drums, allowing you to “skip” a part of the attack or, conversely, quickly “suppress” it depending on the dynamics.
  • Release time: Like the attack time, the release time is also program-dependent. This helps to avoid the “pumping” effect and ensures a smooth return to the initial volume level. When the volume is reduced by 1 dB, the release is about 8 ms, at 10 dB – 80 ms, and with a significant reduction of 50 dB – about 400 ms. This adaptability makes compression less noticeable and more musical.
  • Threshold: The threshold control sets the level above which compression begins. By reducing the threshold, you increase the amount of signal that is subject to compression, thereby amplifying its effect.
  • Compression: This control actually controls the compression ratio. It determines how much the signal level exceeding the threshold will be reduced. Higher compression values lead to a more aggressive compression of the dynamic range.
  • HPF (Highpass Filter): A built-in high-frequency filter with a range from 20 Hz to 500 Hz. This filter is located in the sidechain, allowing you to control how low frequencies affect the compressor’s operation. By raising the HPF frequency, you can make the compressor less sensitive to bass (e.g., kick drum), allowing it to remain more dynamic, while compression effectively works on mid and high frequencies (e.g., snare drum, cymbals).
  • MIX: The mix control allows you to smoothly blend the processed signal (WET) with the unprocessed original signal (DRY). This is an extremely useful feature for parallel compression, which allows you to achieve intense compression for density and punch, while preserving the natural dynamics and attack of the original sound.
  • EXT-SC: This switch activates the external sidechain input. This allows you to use another audio signal to control the dBComp’s compression. For example, you can “duck” the bass guitar under the kick drum by using the kick drum signal as an external sidechain for the compressor on the bass.
  • ANALOG OBSESSION (Oversampling): The signature switch from Analog Obsession. Click on the logo, and it will turn red, activating 4x oversampling. Oversampling helps to reduce unwanted digital artifacts, such as aliasing, that can occur during intensive processing, especially compression. This gives the sound additional clarity and an analog touch.

Why Choose dBComp?

dBComp by Analog Obsession is a free plugin that offers professional-quality dynamics processing. Its program-dependent operation, versatility (from drums to guitars and bass), and the presence of important features such as HPF in the sidechain, a mix control for parallel compression, and oversampling make it a valuable addition to the arsenal of any musician, sound engineer, or producer. It will help you achieve that professional, tight, and “glued” sound that you hear on commercial recordings.
